Becoming a labeller

A labeller teaches machines what things are: this is a pedestrian, this is a weed, this sentence is a complaint. It is careful, repetitive work, and done well it is a skill that leads somewhere.

Who we look for

  • Aged 18 or over, with a secondary school certificate (KCSE in Kenya; senior high school in the Philippines).
  • Good reading in English. Kiswahili, Filipino or another language we work in is an advantage, not a requirement.
  • Patience, attention to detail, and the ability to follow written guidelines exactly.
  • For Rungwell at Home: a quiet place to work, mobile signal, and an address within reach of the centre for training and calibration days.

How to apply

  1. Register

Send your name, phone number and nearest centre to careers@rungwell.org, or register through one of our partner youth programs, colleges or parishes.

  2. Assessment

We invite registered applicants to an assessment day at the centre, by text message, about four times a year. You sit a 50-minute reading and attention test on a computer. There is no interview in English for jobs that do not need it.

  3. Offer

Successful applicants receive a written offer within two weeks, with the start date of their cohort.

  4. Training

Three weeks (Nairobi) or four weeks (Manila) of paid training in a cohort of 40 to 60, before your first task.

Pay and progression

Labellers are employees, paid monthly, with health cover from the first day. Senior labellers, reviewers, trainers and team lead roles are filled from among our labellers, assessed on quality and nothing else, and 287 people have been promoted since 2016.

¹ Pay is a base for every scheduled shift plus task earnings. Rates vary by task and are shown in Rungwell Tasks before a task is accepted. In 2025, labellers who worked a full month earned a median of 2.3 times the applicable minimum wage in Nairobi and 1.6 times in Metro Manila; see the definitions.

A warning about scams

Rungwell never charges a fee to apply, to train or to start work, and never asks for money for equipment. We contact applicants only from rungwell.org addresses or by text message from our centres. If anyone asks you for money in our name, do not pay, and tell us at careers@rungwell.org.
